Understanding Soft Skills in the European Water Sector
The SKILLS4Water project conducted a comprehensive survey across 16 countries to assess the current state and future needs of soft skills in the European water sector. Led by the University of Niš, the survey gathered insights from 119 stakeholders including higher education institutions, industry professionals, and regulatory bodies. The findings reveal a significant gap between the soft skills taught in academic settings and those required in professional environments, particularly in areas such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence.
Respondents identified key personal, interpersonal, and situational soft skills that are essential for success in the water sector. While responsibility, analysis, and teamwork are commonly taught, there is a strong demand for skills like motivation, career management, and adaptability. The survey also explored how long it typically takes new hires to master these skills, with many requiring six months to a year or more. Preferred teaching methods include workshops, hands-on training, and interactive discussions, emphasizing the need for experiential and participatory learning.
The results of this survey will inform the development of a standardized framework for integrating soft skills into higher education curricula and training programmes. By aligning academic offerings with industry needs, SKILLS4Water aims to build a more resilient, skilled, and adaptable workforce capable of addressing complex water challenges across Europe.
