SKILLS4WATER Needs Assessment

BLOG: SKILLS4WATER’s Needs Assessment

written by:

In an era where the water industry faces complex challenges, the disconnect between the industry’s demands and the educational offerings is more apparent than ever. This gap not only hampers the development of necessary competencies among future water professionals but also stunts the growth of innovation within the sector. Recognizing this critical issue, the SKILLS4WATER consortium embarked on a mission to align the skills and competencies of university graduates with the dynamic needs of the water industry. The heart of this initiative is the Needs Assessment, a pivotal step towards revolutionizing higher education curricula in water management.

Understanding the Needs Assessment
At the core of SKILLS4WATER’s innovative approach lies the Needs Assessment and Framework Development, led by UNI. This foundational work aims to bridge the chasm between the water industry’s needs and academic offerings. By fostering a deep understanding of this gap, we seek to enhance the competencies and innovative capabilities of the water sector’s workforce. The process is meticulously designed, consisting of several key activities.

The Process Unfolded
The journey begins with a thorough evaluation of soft skills, pivotal for success in the water management industry. Through engaging with industry stakeholders ranging from water management companies to regulatory bodies via surveys and focus groups, a comprehensive dataset was gathered. The analysis of this data illuminated the critical soft skills required, laying the groundwork for developing impactful training programs.

The assessment was conducted through a series of sub-activities:

  1. Gathering Data:
Collecting insights from industry stakeholders through surveys and focus groups.
  2. Data Analysis:
Identifying the most critical soft skills needed for the industry.
  3. Synthesis of Findings:
Compiling the insights into a comprehensive report to guide the development of a standardized framework.

Current Status
As a project team, we’ve been at the forefront of this endeavor, actively participating in data collection and analysis. The initial phase involved creating and disseminating a questionnaire through an online platform, followed by organizing focus groups to delve deeper into the necessary soft skills for the water sector. The culmination of these efforts is a comprehensive evaluation report, which was meticulously analyzed and approved during the last consortium meeting in Nis on March 15.

Looking Ahead
The completion of the Needs Assessment marks a significant milestone for the SKILLS4Water consortium, but it’s just the beginning. The insights derived from this process will be instrumental in shaping the future of water management education, ensuring that the next generation of water professionals is well-equipped to tackle the industry’s challenges. As we move forward, the development of a tailored framework and practical guidance will be our focus, aiming to seamlessly integrate these essential skills into higher education curricula. Through this collaborative effort, we’re not just bridging gaps; we’re paving the way for a more innovative, competent, and sustainable water industry.
